Speaking as a mental health nurse, I can't imagine what these idiots thought they were doing. The most flattering interpretation being that they believed they were doing something noble in trying to help people in the worst of circumstances. I'm not sure, though, that simply being a 'useful idiot' is that much better than being knowingly complicit in evil, and if you are enabling torture in this way then you are one or the other. Psychiatry over the years has been a pretty sordid business, albeit often with good intentions, but this is a new twist.

Amoung other things, it's a sad illustration of the not all all new tendency to not grant the rights to outsiders (citizens of another country, here) that one does to ones own group. Basic human rights should be universal and not depend on citizenship.
