a different drum
Here’s another one-word iTunes search. Actually, it started out as a two-word search; on shuffle play, Linda Ronstadt’s “Different Drum” came up a little while ago. Then, as a Peter Gabriel song was playing, I noticed its name was also “Different Drum” (from the excellent soundtrack to Passion: Music from The Last Temptation of Christ). I don’t have any other songs called “Different Drum,” but my iTunes library has nine songs with “differen” in the title:
How Am I Different / Aimee Mann / Bachelorette No. 2
Six Different Ways /The Cure / The Head On the Door
Everything Is Different Now / Jennifer Trynin / Cockamamie
The Difference Between You and Me / Leonard Nimoy / Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy (this album is a crackup, btwNimoy showcases dramatic readings and his dubious singing skills to cash in on Spock’s popularity)
Different Drum / Peter Gabriel / Passion: Music from The Last Temptation of Christ
A Different Drum / Linda Ronstadt / Greatest Hits
Different Rub / The Rainmakers / Skin
Different Rub (live) / The Rainmakers / Live at Mississippi Nights 10/16/97 (this isn’t an actual album, but rather taken from a friend’s DAT recording in the crowd)
84,000 Different Delusions / Shawn Colvin / A Few Small Repairs
Interestingly (well, maybe), searching for the word “drum” also came up with nine results. Besides the two songs already listed:
Musette and Drum / Cocteau Twins / Head Over Heels
Doledrum / The La's / The La's (one of the great guitar pop albums of all time, btw)
Drumbeat of War / The Rockhills / Struck By Lightning (which reminds me, I’m playing with those guys this Friday and I’d better go over the songs)
Bang the Drum All Day / Todd Rundgren / The Very Best of Todd Rundgren (just for the record, I hate this song)
Making Plans For Nigel / XTC / Drums and Wires
Ten Feet Tall / XTC / Drums and Wires (although XTC is one of my favorite bands, I’m not crazy about most of that album, so only two songs are in my library)
My Drum Set / Young Fresh Fellows / Because We Hate You
It’s just kind of fun to see the unlikely groupings of songs you get when you do this sort of thing. Admittedly, it sets a low bar for the term “fun”…. Feel free to share your own searches. I love to get comments.

Hmm. This one brought up only five songs in my iTunes:
