Another excellent album from T Bone Burnett. I have the CD for this one, so the MP3s sound a lot better than those converted from my beat-up vinyl collection. Again, I hope that maybe T Bone’s higher visibility as a result of his Oscar might result in the re-release of some of his catalog; maybe even, say, his version of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” off his eponymous first EP.

I never much cared for dobro until I got into this album, but I have to say the riff or theme played by the dobro (left speaker) in “Every Little Thing” is about as compelling as anything I’ve heard. “Primitives” also has some nice dobro work, but the bowed double bass (right speaker) was what really opened my eyes on that song. It’s an amazing arrangement with just three instruments and one voice.

In fact, all three of these songs are basically trios, though “Every Little Thing” adds additional strings on the bridge sections. In “Tear This Building Down,” in which T Bone expresses his opinion of Western civilization, the trio becomes electric, with Jim Keltner doing his usual wonderful job on the drums and Jerry Scheff playing fuzz bass. Great off-the-wall guitar playing by Marc Ribot.
