When There Wasn't Even Any MTV

I have to confess I always thought this was the original version of the song, just because I didn’t hear The Buggles’ version until a couple years later when MTV started. However, tonight when I was going through all the fine print on the albums I realized both Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club and The Buggles’ Age of Plastic were released the same year, 1979. It sounds like an older version—rougher, punkier, more rocked out; in some ways Bruce Woolley’s band sounds like their American contemporaries The Cars, though somehow I get the impression if there was an influence it was headed westward rather than east.

In any case, the liner notes of this album read like a Who’s Who of the future of British technopop: besides The Buggles, Woolley’s band featured Thomas Dolby on keyboards, with his compatriot the amazing Matthew Seligman on bass. In addition, Dolby also played with Lene Lovitch, adding yet another link to the luminaries of the period.

This track was recorded from vinyl into Pro Tools, exported as AIFF and encoded into MP3 format using iTunes.

Ah, what the hell—I’ll go ahead and post the Buggles version as well. Compare and contrast at will.

If you stare at the pattern on the right side while scrolling up and down really fast, you get an early MTV visual effect, too... cool :)

Bruce Woolleys version -- of which there are actually 2 different versions by his band ) are much better .

His LP is quite easily obtained on vinyl via the internet but also rereleased couple of years ago on CD - again easily obtained - .You must hear 'Your the Circus im the Clown', lyrics are fantastic.
